IAFF Line of Duty Death Notification: Firefighter/EMT Michael Altman
It is with deep regret that we advise the membership of the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter/EMT Michael Altman, age 32, of the Chicago Fire Department.
On March 16, 2026, Firefighter Altman was critically injured while operating at a residential structure fire in the Rogers Park neighbourhood of Chicago. During interior operations, he fell through the floor into the basement. He was transported to hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries on March 17, 2026.
Subsequent reporting has confirmed that an individual has been charged in connection with this incident.
Firefighter Altman leaves behind a young family, who now face an unimaginable loss.
This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers inherent in our profession. The conditions faced by Firefighter Altman are the same conditions we encounter on the fireground. This could be any one of us.
We extend our sincere condolences to Firefighter Altman’s family, friends, and all members of the Chicago Fire Department.
