Funeral Information For DC Richard Karl Straub, Retired TFS – Former TFD (L-113)

Rick Straub – 16 Sep 1957 ~ 06 Feb 2026

Rick Straub, retired District Chief after 36 years of service, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on February 8, 2026, following a courageous three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. He was 68. Rick began his career with the City of Toronto Fire Department on May 14, 1984. He spent the majority of his career serving in the demanding downtown core, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with his crews in one of the busiest divisions in the city. He rose through the ranks to District Chief, earning the respect of members through steady leadership, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the job. Service was a Straub family legacy. Rick was a proud father to Kathleen, Michael (Toronto Fire Services Inspector), Sarah (Matthew), and Matthew, and a devoted grandfather to Leo. He shared the bond of the fire service with his twin brother Ralph (retired Toronto Fire Services District Chief), Velda, and his son Michael (Toronto Fire Services Inspector). The job was not just his career; it was part of his family’s identity. Born and raised in Toronto to Karl and Katharina Straub (predeceased), Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Shirley; his children and grandson; his brother Ralph (retired Toronto Fire Services); his sister Uli (predeceased by Gene); and extended family, friends, and colleagues.

Outside the uniform, Rick was a passionate hockey fan who coached his sons in Pickering, stayed active at the gym, travelled throughout Europe learning languages and cultures, wintered in Florida, and enjoyed cruising with friends. Rick’s life was defined by loyalty to his family, his crew, and the citizens he served. His watch may be complete, but his legacy within the Toronto firefighting community will endure.
