Funeral Information For DC Rick (Frederick Leslie) Galway Retired TFS (Former L-1137 EFD)

DC Rick (Frederick Leslie) Galway – 1950 – 2024

Loved by his wife Ruth (née Hodgson), and children: John Girard (Catharine Holmes); Marny (Margaret) Girard (Josh Smith); and his beloved grandson Mali (Malikyte) Bryant. Rick will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Rick was loyal, brave, determined, honourable, chivalrous, charming, funny, and outspoken.

Rick’s lifelong dedication to serving others is epitomized by his career and volunteer work: Firefighter, Captain, District Chief of Communications for Toronto Fire Services, Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, member of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM), Neighbourhood Watch member, Board Member of Eli Technology, and Canadian Director of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). He was honoured to be NENA’s President from 2011-2012. In recognition of his service to Canada, Rick received a Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Throughout his career, Rick championed 9-1-1 Dispatchers. He was both an instructor with the fire service and a member of the committee that developed the Emergency Number Professionals (ENP) Certification. ENP certification provides formal recognition of unheralded “first-first responders”.

Rick is predeceased by his wife Vanda (née Zaniol) and brother Randy Galway. Son of the late Leslie F. and Lois Galway (née Trapp). The family would like to thank the caregivers at Brookside Senior Living for their heartfelt and compassionate care. Rick’s first love was flying. When thinking of Rick, look heavenward and imagine that he has “slipped the surly bonds of earth & danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings”.
