The Education Committee is pleased to invite all members and retirees to learn about sleep wellness. Regardless of where you lay your head and when this incredible opportunity to learn about all aspects of sleep health will be extremely useful for you and your loved ones.
Sleep Wellness – What is it all about?
“Restoring Resilience: Optimizing Sleep for Firefighters in the Face of Shift Work, Vigilance and Trauma “
Understand the science of sleep and its role in physical and mental recovery, immune function, cognition, and emotional health.
Examine how erratic schedules and high stress increase the risk of chronic sleep loss and insomnia in firefighters.
Learn how sleep quality impacts focus, decision-making, reaction time, and overall job performance.
Apply practical techniques to improve sleep hygiene, manage schedules, and enhance recovery during off-duty hours.
Discover evidence-based methods to address insomnia and improve sleep without medication.
Understand how trauma leads to nightmares, hyperarousal and other sleep disturbances.
Implement strategies for better sleep in those with PTSD, including relaxation techniques and therapeutic support
Presentations by:
Julia Glowinski, MSW, RSW
Julia is a Registered Social Worker, a Certified Sleep Consultant and a therapist experienced in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). In 2018, Julia established Glow Sleep Services, a sleep-based social work practice, because of her passion for working with families and individuals experiencing sleep difficulties. She is interested in the correlation between mood, mental health, and sleep, with a special focus on optimizing sleep for first responders. Julia provides corporate workshops on sleep health for companies and organizations worldwide.
Janany Jayanthikumar, MSW, RSW
Janany has a Masters of Social Work from the University of Toronto with a specialization in health and mental health. She has diversified experience working in clinical and academic settings. As an experienced clinical social worker, Janany has extensive knowledge in trauma and attachment. In addition to her clinical work, Janany has taught at various post-secondary institutions. She is also a featured mental health expert in the media on CP24 Breakfast. Janany has a profound interest in understanding the connection between sleep and mental health.
The committee has secured four dates for the presentation; Wednesday, October 9th, Thursday, October 10th, Friday, October 11th, and Thursday, October 17th. Light breakfast options will be available at 8:15 am with presentations beginning at 8:45 am. The workshops will be at the Association office, 14 Cosentino Dr. Scarborough.
