Retired District Chief George Edward Evans
March 5th, 1939 – May 16th , 2024

We have been notified of the passing of Retired District Chief George Edward Evans at the age of 85.

Brother Evans started with the Toronto Fire Department on Feb 15th, 1963, promoted to captain on May 28th, 1984. On February 10th, 1992, promoted to District Chief and retired after 35 years of service in 1998.

Members have shared the story of Brother Evans being trapped in a building collapse at a downtown fire years ago, and he was able to self-rescue himself by bench pressing a beam off his chest.

George, 85 years, of Pickering, Ontario, passed away at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on May 16, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on March 5, 1939 in Toronto to Alexander and Elsie Evans. He was married to the late Helen (Trinier) for 66 years. He is survived by his daughters; Wendy (Marty), Jackie and Karen. He was a District Chief with the Toronto Fire Department before his retirement in 1998. He loved to be outdoors cutting up firewood and riding his ATV to clear a snow road on the lake, playing the banjo, dancing, listening to music and he absolutely loved to get a laugh by telling jokes. He was a member of the Pine Ridge Bluegrass Folklore Society, Toronto Fire Fighters War Veterans’ Association, Toronto Fire Department Pensioners’ Association, TFD Critical Incident Stress Team, Madawaska Valley Horticultural Society, Madawaska Valley Euchre Club, Opeongo Seniors Centre, Barry’s Bay Choir, North Hastings Community Choir, Pickering Notables Choir, Durham Regional Police Choir and the Discovery Place Euchre Group. A celebration of life will be held at Discovery Place in the Recreation Centre (1890 Valley Farm Road, Pickering) on Saturday June 1st, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. A private interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
