Line Of Duty Death of Retired Captain Douglas W. Cook
February 6th, 1951 – May 14th, 2024

TPFFA has been notified of the passing of retired P322 Captain Doug Cook at the age of 73 at his home surrounded by family. Brother Cook’s death was ruled a Line of Duty Death as it falls under our presumptive cancer legislation.

Brother Cook was the only firefighter hired in East York Fire Department in 1973 starting his 41 plus year career on April 2nd, of that year, and retired on February 28th, 2015. Doug’s father was also an East York Firefighter. Doug lived in East York his whole life and spent his career at station 322 serving the community he grew up in. He was a true professional and mentor to many playing an active role in developing Hazardous material procedures, and protocols.

LODD Ceremony arrangements have now been finalized for retired Captain Doug Cook.

TFS personnel attending the funeral are to wear full dress uniform, (white shirt and gloves), and cap.

Cap Badges will be Shrouded.

FORM UP AND ROLLING SALUTE

We will be forming up and honoring Doug with a rolling salute. Members will be asked to form up and come to attention when the command is given.

The rolling salute begins at the colors (Canadian Flag salute comes up) and is completed, at the rear step of the caisson, (salute comes down), then bowing your head as the family passes. Continue to stand until you’re dismissed.

Douglas “Doug” Cook passed away at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto surrounded by his loving family. Doug, was the beloved husband of 48 years and best friend to Lynne (nee Poulton), proud father of Cale Cook and wife Tara Leydon Cook and “Grandpa” of Savannah, who he loved beyond measure. Predeceased by his parents, William H Cook (Retired Captain of East York Fire Department) and Doris Cook. Brother-in-law of Barry Poulton (deceased) and Elizabeth, Bruce Poulton and Irene, Lori Poulton. Douglas was also a much-loved uncle and great-uncle.

Doug, who retired from Toronto Fire Services was a Hazardous Materials Captain with TFS and early member of the HUSAR team. He trained at CFB Suffield in Medicine Hat and obtained his Hazardous Materials certifications. He was one of the directors in the early years of the Metro Hazmat Conference. Doug was a respected and honorable firefighter. He loved his profession and was happy every shift to go on duty; dedicated to helping people. He was a firefighter for 42 years.

Doug and Lynne saw the world travelling and in their retirement years cruising with family and friends. Doug, an avid sportsman and fan, he played football and hockey at EYCI, in the Toronto Fire Department hockey league at Ted Reeve area for many years and looked forward to his Thursday golf with EYFD old boots league. A member of Meadowbrook Golf Club. Doug was involved in sports and so enjoyed supporting his son Cale in his hockey at SHS, RSGC and the GTHL “no arena too far no matter the weather”.

The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23rd. A funeral will be held on Friday May 24th at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow.

We thank the doctors and nursing staff at Sunnybrook and Michael Garron Hospitals for the care and support they provided Doug and the family. In lieu of flower, donations to the SickKids Foundation would be appreciated. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
