Peter Michael Chitty – April 6th, 1942, ~ Jan 17th, 2024
We are notifying the membership of the LODD passing of retired North York firefighter Peter Michael Chitty at the age of 81 after a 35-year battle with an occupational disease.
Brother Chitty started with the department on January 6th, 1969, and retired after 29 years of service on January 31st, 1998. He worked at 111 (NY 13) for most of his career and served some time at station 123 (NY 5), Peter was well-liked by many of his co-workers and enjoyed bluegrass music as well as building custom log homes.
Taking a quote from the funeral home website,
“Peter was truly a unique character. Tough as nails and very funny. Always had a joke at the ready. He was a wonderful partner to Marlene. He was a good friend to many.”
He also was in the Canadian Air Force and served time with NATO between 1960 to 1966.
Peter did not want a department ceremony, and we will be honouring his wishes.
This will not be a formal ceremony, members that wish to attend may wear their full dress uniform.

Peter Chitty passed away peacefully at home at the age of 81 on January 17th surrounded by family and dear friends. He has been reunited with his late wife, Marlene Campbell.
He was a beloved brother to Karen, father to Michael, Lisa, and Mitzi, a hero in the eyes of his grandchildren Logan, Evan, and Lilyana, and a dear friend to so many.
Peter joined the Air Force at a very young age, and in 1969 joined the North York Fire Department where he served an accomplished career of nearly 27 years.
Peter fought a 35-year battle with cancer with true grit like no other but sadly succumbed to the disease.
Peter’s love of music led him to open his home to host accomplished bluegrass, country, and folk bands for concerts in an intimate setting.
He is and will be truly missed.
