The passing of Active Member Captain David Wilcox
David Wilcox – 27 June 1962 – 13 September 2023
Suddenly at his home on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, Dave at the age of 61, beloved high school sweetheart and husband of Lori (nee: Tumber). Loving father of Kara Lafreniere (Andre), Jen Boyter (Josh) and Matt (Taylor). Devoted grandpa to Emily, Evan, and Rose. Predeceased by his loving mother Elizabeth “Betty” and his father James “Jim” Wilcox.
Missed by his parents-in-law Lois and Bill Tumber. Dave will be fondly remembered by his sisters, brothers, extended family, and friends. Forever in the hearts of his Toronto Fire Services family. Dave’s family brought him so much joy, he was incredibly proud of his children! For the last 11 years, he loved being Grandpa or rather “Timmy”, to his grandchildren. He was the instigator of many a water fight and was an expert backyard rink builder. He could never remember to pack tent poles though! No one loved a pun or bad Dad joke better than Dave.
Some people vacuum and tidy up when their parents visit. Dave’s kids checked smoke and carbon monoxide detectors ensuring fire extinguishers were charged, their candles hidden, and curtains well hemmed away from heat sources.
After his family, firefighting was Dave’s second love. He began his four-decade career as a volunteer with the Tottenham Fire Department and later with Adjala-Tosorontio and Rosemont. In 1995 he became a professional firefighter with the North York Fire Department, which would later merge into Toronto Fire Service. He loved his crew and being on the trucks. Dave made his last call as Captain at Station 333 B shift, where his Spiderman bed sheets were awaiting his return.
Our condolences to Captain David Wilcox, family, friends, and co-workers.
